Research Assistant Professor
Tennessee Forest Products Center
Tim Young is a Research Assistant Professor in the Tennessee Forest Products Center. He holds a 100% research appointment in the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station. Tim joined the center in January of 1998. His area of research is the development of statistical process control human machine interface platforms for wood products manufacturers.
He is a native of Wisconsin, graduating with a B. S. degree in Forest Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1979. He also received a M.S. degree in Forest Economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1983 with minors in business administration and statistics. Tim received a M. S. degree in Statistics from the University of Tennessee, College of Business Administration in 1993 with a double minor in management information systems and mathematics.
Tim worked for Georgia-Pacific (GP) Corporation as a Continuous Improvement Manager from 1994 to 1997 at the Holly Hill Fiberboard manufacturing facility in Holly Hill South Carolina. Statistical process control systems were established at the facility which led to improvements in productivity and quality, and the re-establishment of the competitive position of the manufacturing facility. Human machine interface (HMI) platforms were developed in the operator control centers using Wonderware. The Wonderware HMI technology at Holly Hill Fiberboard was the first in the Industrial Wood Products Division of GP which has led to its use by the majority of the mills in the division. Tim hosted a corporate level quality conference in 1995 where nine mills from the Industrial Wood Products Division of GP participated which led to the development of a division-wide quality vision. While with Georgia-Pacific Corp., Tim attended seminars by J.M. Juran and Genchi Taguchi. Prior to his time with GP, he also attended several seminars of the late W.E. Deming.
Prior to joining Georgia-Pacific Corp., Tim worked as a Research Associate for The University of Tennessee, Agricultural Experiment Station from 1983 to 1994 in the area of Forest Economics. Other work experiences have been as a Statistical Analyst with the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin in 1982; Systems Analyst with Champion International Corp. in Norway, Michigan in 1981; and Forestry Technician with the U.S. Forest Service in Troy, Montana in 1980.
Professional affiliations include the American Statistical Association,
American Society for Quality, Tennessee Forestry Association, Forest Products
Society, and TAPPI. Tim will soon be a certified Wonderware Integrator
with a specialty in the application of statistical process control systems.
Tim was the President (1997) and Vice-President (1996) of the Wonderware
Users Group for the state of South Carolina and has served as Secretary
(1996) of TAPPI's Fiber Raw Materials Supply Committee.
