Dr. J. Larry Wilson,
Dr. J. Larry Wilson is a Professor in Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries. He holds a joint appointment in research and teaching where his major interests are in fisheries management, conservation fisheries, and aquaculture. He began with the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture in 1970 with the Department of Agricultural Biology and moved to Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries in 1977. During the four years prior to the move, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Wildlife and Fisheries Science degree program (1974) and the development of a fisheries research program. He recently served as Interim Head of the Department, stepping down in 2007.
A native of West Tennessee, Wilson earned a B.S. in Biology and a Certificate in Education from Union University in 1964. He continued his education by obtaining a M.S. in Zoology (Animal Behavior) from the University of Florida in 1967. During this time, he spent two summers in Costa Rica working with the University and the Caribbean Conservation Corporation in the green sea turtle conservation program. Following the M.S. and a brief period as a research technician at the U.T. Memorial Research Center and Hospital, he entered the doctoral program in aquatic biology at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He received his Ph.D. in Zoology in 1970 after completing a fisheries management research project.
Dr. Wilson has served as major advisor to over 65 MS and PhD graduate students. He has also authored numerous technical publications and presented his research findings at regional, national, and international professional gatherings. He has held Associate Editorships for regional and national technical publications and has also contributed to well-known popular publications such as Southern Living and Farm Pond Harvest. He has served in offices of professional and honorary organizations at the local, various regional, and national levels. He is a Past-President of Gamma Sigma Delta (UT Chapter), Chairman of the USDA/CSRS Regional Research Project S-168 "Warmwater Aquaculture" (1984-86) and served as Secretary of that project from 1981-1984. He also served as President of the Southern Division, American Fisheries Society in 1993-94.
Dr. Wilson served as Advisor for the First International Conference on Warmwater Aquaculture in February 1983 and as Co-Chairman of the Southern Region Aquaculture Center (SRAC) Technical Committee from 1988-2004. He has participated in international activities in Brazil and Thailand in the areas of environmental assessment, water quality, and aquaculture. Dr. Wilson is certified as a Fishery Scientist by the American Fisheries Society and is a life member of the American Fisheries Society and the Tennessee Academy of Science. He is a member of First Farragut United Methodist Church and resides in West Knoxville with his wife, Debbie, and children, Ben and Sarah.
