Richard M. Evans
Superintendent, Forestry Experiment Station
Evans has a 100% research appointment with the UT Agricultural Experiment Station. He is Superintendent of the Forestry Experiment Station which includes 12,000 acres of research forest property in four location in East and Middle Tennessee. Offices for the UT Forestry Experiment Station are at the Oak Ridge Forest and Arboretum in Oak Ridge, TN, where Evans is headquartered and also serves as Director of the UT Arboretum Project. Richard has been with the Agricultural Experiment Station since 1972.
Evans is a native of Nashville, TN. He received his BS degree in forest resources management (1968) and MS degree in forest genetics (1970) from the University of Tennessee. He began his career as a forest geneticist at Texas A&M University where he served as liaison geneticist to eleven companies and four state organizations in the Western Gulf Forest Tree Improvement Program.
Richard came to UT as the first Superintendent for the newly organized Forestry Experiment Station under the direction of the UT Agricultural Experiment Station. The Forestry Experiment Station consolidate the administration of what were the UT Oak Ridge, Cumberland, Friendship, and Highland Rim Forestry Field Station into one unit. Besides Richard's administrative and management responsibilities, he is involved in research endeavors in forest management, silvicultural and regeneration, as well as plant selection and breeding work in horticultural.
Evans has been involved in several professional organizations. He has served in all office capacities at the state and local for the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and was a member of the national SAF long range planning team. He represented the SAF as an intervenor in the appeal Cherokee National Forest Plan. In 1987 Richard was recognized by the local SAF as the Outstanding Forester and elected nationally as a Fellow. Richard has served on the board of directors of several professional and conservation organizations, including his present position on the board of the Tennessee Forestry Association.
Richard enjoys outdoor activities and travel with his wife and two children
and managing his 80 acre tree farm in Morgan County.
