Donald G. Hodges is a Professor of Forest Economics and Policy and Director of the University of Tennessee Natural Resource Policy Center. Don is a native of Knoxville and received his Bachelor of Science in Forestry from The University of Tennessee in 1982. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Forest Economics from the University of Georgia in 1985 and 1988, respectively.

From 1988 to 1989, Don served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the USDA Forest Service, Southern Forest Experiment Station in New Orleans, Louisiana and conducted research on the prescribed fire legislation in the South and economic returns associated with investments in intensive forest management practices. After finishing his postdoctoral appointment, Don served as a faculty member at the University of New Hampshire, Mississippi State University, and Tulane University. His academic research emphasizes the economics of southern forest management opportunities and the effects of public policy, land use change, and markets on forests.

Don teaches Economics of Forest and Wildland Resources (Forestry 314), Forest Resource Management (Forestry 420), Advanced Forest Resource Management (Forestry 530), and Seminar in Natural Resources (FWF 610). He also co-teaches Forests and Forestry in American Society (Forestry 100) with Scott Schlarbaum and Planning and Management of Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries Resources (FWF 416) with Billy Minser.  He also serves as graduate program coordinator for the department.
His research program emphasizes the economic aspects of natural resource management and related public policies. Specific research areas include Forest Values, Evaluation of Forest Policies, Forest Management and Operations, and Resource Analysis.

Don has been very active in several professional and student organizations. He is a member of the Society of American Foresters and Southern Forest Economics Workers. He also has served as faculty advisor to the forestry clubs at New Hampshire and Mississippi State. Don currently is advisor of Xi Sigma Pi.
