Boyd L. Dearden
Professor

Dr. Boyd L. Dearden is a Professor in Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries and in Statistical and Computing Services. He is also involved in the Value-Added Research and Assessment Center. Dr. Dearden has been at the University of Tennessee since 1974. He received his B.S. in Zoology and an M.S. in Zoology from the University of Utah.

After a 4-year tour of duty in the Air Force, he continued his education by obtaining a Ph.D. in Systems Ecology from Colorado State University. During his initial tenure at UT he authored several research articles with most relating to computer and statistical applications in the renewable resources, with others relating to dietary studies.

His current position is a joint appointment between the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station. Job duties include teaching and research support/service to the Institute of Agriculture through the Statistical and Computing Services unit.

The position is unique in that it is not only a joint appointment between the College and Experiment Station, but it is also associated with two functional units, the Department of

Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries Science and the Statistical and Computing Services unit. In the latter capacity, he serves within the Institute at large rather than within an identifiable faculty group. Within the College he is involved in the traditional in- class teaching activities and teaches 3-4 classes a year in both the undergraduate and graduate curriculums. He has taught classes in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Law Enforcement, Introduction to Renewable Resources, Micro-computers in Agriculture and Advanced Micro-computer courses. He advises approximately 25 undergraduate students per term and serves on advisory committees for M.S. and Ph.D. students as requested.

The general responsibility of his position is to oversee computer hardware and software utilization in the Institute of Agriculture. This involves planning, acquisition and deployment of computer hardware and software. In this capacity, strategic counsel is provided to faculty and administration. He also provides training for faculty, staff and support personnel on software and hardware as needed.
