I'm still living in small town West Virginia, population 55.  While working in West Virginia, I helped provide long-time protection of 70 acres of wetlands.  Located near Canaan Valley, this wetland complex provides habitat for unique plant species, considered rare.

After 32 years with NCDFR, I decided it is time to retire as District Forester and enjoy other opportunities.  I was involved as the IC on multiple all-risk assignments in NC with a T2 IMT as well as in Wyoming on fires, Texas on the Shuttle Recovery and New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. I am still involved with fire dispatch as an Information Officer and Safety Officer.  I also provide consultant services in fire planning, preparedness and management in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee.  This includes preparing FIREWISE plans for individuals/developments, as well as reviewing and evaluating prescribed fire.  This along with fly fishing and travel with my wife Janet, is a good change of pace.

After receiving B.S. in 1970 (can this be taken in more than one way?), I worked in a warehouse for a few months (something called the "draft" made permanent employment difficult to find) until giving up and enlisting in the Army in 1971. Served 3+ years in KY, NJ, TX, and Germany, returned to Big Orange Country for M.S. conferred in 1975. Worked for a couple of years for the TX Forest Service doing I&E in the Houston area.

Had a major career path shift toward law school, graduated without honors in 12/79, and was admitted to the bar in 1980.  (Not to be confused with the bar admissions the class of 1970 had practiced years before).  Spent about 12 years in active practice in both governmental and private employment.  For the last 13 1/2 years, I've been employed as Family Law Magistrate in Clearwater, FL.  A far cry from forestry, but an enjoyable and rewarding field providing I don't take the cases/emotion home w/ me at night.

Married since 1972 (to the same wonderful wife), 3 children and one 5-month-old grand.

Hello from Pawleys Island, SC!
After many years of working in industrial forestry with Union Camp and IP, I now work for RMS managing 270,000 acres here in coastal S.C.
Give me a call..especially that Penn yankee Dr. Schell, or maybe Dr. Thor (I gave up selling Christmas trees after I worked for Dr. Thor for a few years..he's a slave driver)!!  Mobile number is 843-240-2149.  I have lots of cold beer and love to tell lies.  Come see me! Regards, Joey
